A Court of First Instance bench, presided by Judge Hamad Abdel Latif Abdel Jawad, ordered the woman to pay Dh50,000 in fine. She will be deported after serving her prison term.

The Iranian woman earlier denied in court the smuggling charge and claimed that she had been on medication and that she could submit a medical report to this effect.

As many as 4,396 codeine pills, weighing 1.6kg, were found in the defendant’s possession when she was arrested at the Dubai International Airport on February 17. An Emirati police woman corporal told the prosecutor that she searched the defendant at Terminal 2 of the airport after the latter was arrested by the immigration officers based on a police circular.
