Though nobdy was injured, the losses are estimated to run into millions of dirhams.

The fire started in one of the warehouses around 1.45am and spread quickly in strong wind, Abdullah Al Suwaidi, Director-General of the Sharjah Civil Defence Department, told Khaleej Times. It completely destroyed seven warehouses storing home furnishings, including curtains, cushions and pillows, cotton and wood — all highly flammable.

Firefighters and engines from Sharjah, Dubai and Ajman battled the fire for nearly four hours to bring it under control. The priority was to prevent the fire from spreading to a nearby warehouse that stored diesel barrels and the personnel succeeded in that.

The police and ambulance units were present on the scene to help firefighters and rush anyone suffering from suffocation or exhaustion to the hospital.

“The cause of the fire is not yet known but the site will be handed over to the police forensic experts to conduct an investigation to determine it,” said Al Suwaidi.
