According to a senior officer, the detainees proved to have absconded from their sponsors, and worked with employers other than theirs in violation of the labour and residency rules and regulations.
“We have run sudden raids on a regular basis particularly at cafeterias of the Fareej Al Marr following tip-offs from undercover agents and inspectors,” said Lt. Col. Khalaf Al Ghaith, Assistant Director-General for Investigation and Illegals Follow-up Sector.
“We first identified 27 institutions at the targeted area, and then raided them all at one go, on Saturday. The detainees, all Africans, proved to be domestic helps,” he added.Late last month, the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai announced that it has detained 5,552 illegal residents and workers in the first five months of the year. Those included a gang of four Asian men implicated in illegally assisting, sheltering, and providing part and full time work to 18 maids, including two Africans and 16 Asians.
Under the UAE labour laws, holders of employment visas from other sponsors are not allowed to work part time under any circumstances unless permitted by the sponsor. And, visit visa holders are not allowed to work at all.
“The public has been urged to immediately report any illegal residents or absconders they come across, at the toll free number: 8005111,” he said.
