Lieutenant General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police, made the announcement on Wednesday
Four of them were, however, acquitted of torture and assault leading to the death of one of the detainees. The lieutenant-colonel did not face this charge.
The court bench, presided by Judge Mohammed Jamal Kamel, cleared eight other officers of various charges including torture during interrogation, assault leading to death, unlawful detention, abuse of power, forgery and giving false statements. The court dismissed the civil lawsuit filed by one of the detainees.
The verdict is subject to appeal within 15 days at the Court of Appeal. The prosecution accused six lieutenants and six other lower-ranking officers of using torture and excessive force on the three detainees to make them give information in connection with a kidnap-cum-murder case. One of the inmates died succumbing to the injuries suffered during the alleged torture soon after he was brought from Oman. Defence lawyers earlier argued in the court that the victim collapsed in the police station due to a medical condition.
They also argued that the three inmates were brought into police custody on kidnap and murder charges, but the prosecution focused its attention on the alleged use of torture during interrogation.
One of the higher-ranking officers was also accused of forging an official document pertaining to the dates of the arrest and questioning of the two other detainees who were also allegedly tortured and beaten up.
Another officer, also in a higher rank, was accused of giving false information related to the dates of the arrest of those two detainees.
