United Bank Limited (UBL) won the UBL Twenty20 Trophy for the first time on Friday night and Wajahat Husain, Senior Executive Vice President, Head of International Group, UBL and President, Abu Dhabi Cricket Council (ADCC), reckoned it would be about sustenance from here on.

UBL, consisting of UAE internationals, defeated a strong Yogi Group by 25 runs in the final, under lights, at the Shaikh Zayed International Cricket Stadium.

“I hope that this win would prove to be the fillip that we require in terms of becoming serious contenders in the UAE. We want to take it forward from here. We have climbed a mountain and now it is about sustenance,” a thrilled Wajahat said after the game.

“I’m so proud of my team. They are a great team and a great bunch of lads. We take great pride in this win. They fought all the way through the tournament,” Wajahat added.

He said that team work and camaraderie was what got them through. “It was a great and fantastic win. We never reached the semifinals of this tournament before. But the way they stuck it out in this edition was fabulous. There was a lot of professionalism and it was a befitting final. Our team work was excellent and there was good camaraderie between the players. That is what helped us all the way. The captain Qazi Ayub is a veteran and brilliant leader,” said Wajahat.

About their opponents, he said: “Yogi Group played an excellent game. One team had to lose but they were worthy finalists.”

In his capacity as the president of the ADCC, Wajahat said the Shaikh Zayed International Cricket Stadium facility will have two more grassy grounds.

“We will be wrapping up six more tournaments during Ramadan. We will have more or less a similar calendar for next season. In terms of facilities, we are developing our first grassy ground outside the stadium. It should be ready midway through next season. This will be one of two grassy grounds,” he said.
