Al Masaood clinch title

ABU DHABI — Nissan Al Masaood started the new cricketing season in fine fashion by clinching the Carpetland Ramadan Cup Twenty20 tournament title at the Shaikh Zayed International Cricket Stadium late on Tuesday night.

Nissan Al Masaood defeated William Hare Abu Dhabi Gymkhana by six wickets in the final.

Opener Razik Khan guided Nissan Al Masaood with a good all-round show. He took two wickets and then top scored with 78.

Batting first, William Hare Abu Dhabi Gymkhana struggled in the face of some fine bowling by Nissan Al Masaood. William Hare Abu Dhabi Gymkhana were tottering at 43 for 4 before Mohammed Shafiq and Asim Khurshid arrested the slide with a 54-run stand for the fifth wicket. Khurshid made 49 from 33 balls with four boundaries and two sixes, while wicketkeeper-batsman Mohd. Shafiq scored 30 from 26 balls with two sixes and a boundary as William Hare Abu Dhabi Gymkhana made 157 for 9 in their 20 overs.

Nissan captain Mohammed Usman took three for 30, while Razik Khan took two for 20.

In reply, Al Masaood’s top order were rock solid as openers Razik Khan and Sajit Kumara put on 99 runs for the opening wicket.

Razik Khan scored 78 from 43 balls with seven boundaries and six sixes, while Sajit Kumara made 28 from 33 balls with four boundaries.

Captain Mohammed Usman made 22 from 17 balls with two boundaries and a six as Nissan got home in 17 overs, losing four wickets. The first edition of the Carpetland Ramadan Cup, drew 20 teams from different emirates.

Mohammed Saleh, chairman of Al Aqili Group and Al Mohammad Saeed Al Aqili, vice chairman and CEO along with Wajahat Hussain, president of the Abu Dhabi Cricket Council and Dilawar Mani, president the Emirates Cricket Board, gave away the prizes.

“We have been overwhelmed by the response to the tournament,” said Aqili, adding that it will be an annual event.
