Hosts Pakistan were struggling on 33 runs for the loss of four wickets after restricting South Africa for a paltry 220 on a two-paced pitch at the National Stadium in Karachi on Tuesday.
Pakistan lost the wickets of openers Imran Butt (9) and Abid Ali (4) while captain Babar Azam (7) and night watchman Shaheen Shah Afridi (0) did not trouble the scorers either.
Azhar Ali (5) and Fawad Alam (5 ) were at the crease at the end of play on day one.
Kagiso Rabada finished off with two wickets for eight runs while Anrich Nortje and Keshav Maharaj took one wicket each.
Earlier, South Africa were bowled out for 220 runs in 69. 2overs.
Spinner Yasir Shah was the pick of the Pakistan bowlers, claiming three wickets for 54 runs while Shaheen Shah Afridi (2 for 49) and debutant Nauman Ali ( 2 for 38) also impressed.
