Saqib Ali Bags Best All-rounder Award

DUBAI — Saqib Ali bagged the best all rounder for his consistent performance in the first division cricket at the 11th Shyam Bhatia Annual UAE Awards at the SAS Radisson Hotel here on Wednesday night.

Top England cricketer Andrew Flintoff was the chief guest who gave away the prizes. Ali of New Medical Centre played three matches in the Bukhatir League (A Division) and scored 267 runs without being out even once. He also picked up six wickets for 109 runs.

Ali, who is currently representing the UAE team in the World Twenty20 qualifiers, showed amazing consistency in the Al Dhaid Gold Cup 40 over tournament for an aggregate total of 446 runs at an average of 89.2.

The former captain of the UAE, who pocketed a cash award of Dhs 4000, has also played a crucial role in taking his team to the Super Four in the qualifiers. Kashif Ahmed of consolidated Shipping Services was named the Best Batsman for his 149 runs in the Al Dhaid Gold Cup tournament and 257 runs in Bukhatir League. He took home a cash award of Dhs 3000.

The Best Bowler award and a cash prize of Dhs 3000 went to Sanjeewa Dias of New Medical Centre, who bagged 20 wickets in the Bukhatir League and 9 wickets in the Sharjah Ramadan Tournament.

A special award was given to the best Women cricketer of UAE consisting a cash prize of Dhs 1500. Natasha Michael Cherriath began her cricketing career as a medium pacer when she was just 12 years old. She led the UAE team at a very young age in the ACC Womens Tournament in 2007.

Her tremendous show fetched her the Player of the match twice and was also selected as the Best Batter in the ACC Under-19 Womens Cricket Tournament held in Thailand. She scored 121 runs, including a fifty at an average of 30.25.

In the second division league, Arfan Haider of Abu Dhabi Gymkhana won the best all rounder award. He scored 181 runs in Fortune Cup, 60 runs in UBL Floodlit tournament in Abu Dhabi, and 220 runs in Bukhatir League for a total of 461 runs. He also picked up 39 wickets for 532 runs at an average of 13.64 runs. He received Dhs 2500 cash prize.

The best batsman award and a cash prize of Dhs 1,500 went to Mohammed Asif of Seven Seas. He scored 279 runs in Fortune Cup, 325 runs in UBL Floodlit Tournament in Abu Dhabi, 154 runs in Rufi Cup, 135 runs in Al Dhaid premier League, and 154 runs in Bukhatir League of Sharjah Cricket Council for a total of 1047 runs in 5 tournaments. The best bowler was Shadeep Silva of New Medical Centre. He took 27 wickets in Fortune Cup and UBL Cup in Abu Dhabi Tournaments, 10 wickets in Rufi Cup, five wickets in Al Dhaid Gold Cup and also picked up 13 wickets in the Bukhatir League.

The best umpires awards went to Lekh Raj (Abu Dhabi Cricket Council), Talib Hussain (Ajman Cricket Council), BA Khan (Dubai Cricket Council), Fidel Jeary (Sharjah Cricket Council). Each umpire received a cash prize of Dhs 1,500.
