Philander, in just his seventh test, finished with figures of six for 81 as the hosts were bowled out for a deficit of 199 runs following South Africa’s 474 for nine declared.

The 26-year-old Philander, who took 10 wickets in the second test to help South Africa to a nine-wicket victory and 1-0 series lead, also achieved his 50th test victim when he bowled Doug Bracewell for a second-ball duck.

He has taken 21 wickets this series at 14.09.

Mark Gillespie hit two boundaries off Philander to ensure New Zealand just avoided the follow on target before he became Philander’s sixth wicket for 10.

New Zealand captain Ross Taylor did not return to the crease after he had retired hurt for 18 when he was struck on the left wrist by a Morne Morkel bouncer and take for X-rays.

Kane Williamson (39), Daniel Vettori (30), Bracewell and Kruger van Wyk (seven) all fell in quick succession after tea, with South Africa capturing three wickets with the score stuck at 263.

The hosts, who have made a habit of getting starts this series before getting out, repeated the pattern on Monday with five of their top seven passing 30 before being dismissed.

Dean Brownlie also made 29 before he top-edged a Philander delivery to Dale Steyn at deep backward square, shortly before tea.

New Zealand had resumed on Monday on 60 without loss but lost three wickets before lunch with Daniel Flynn the first wicket to fall when he nicked a Philander delivery to wicketkeeper Mark Boucher for 45.

Brendon McCullum (31) then top-edged a Steyn bouncer to Boucher just after he and Martin Guptill had brought up their 50-run partnership, while Guptill fell in the final over before lunch, trapped in front by Philander for 59.

The visitors have a 1-0 lead in the three-match series following their nine-wicket victory in the second test at Seddon Park in Hamilton, where they bowled New Zealand out for under 200 in both innings.
