With the mind games and verbal volleys being played out over the days preceding the four-Test series, ICC Match referee for the series, Chris Broad, spoke to the captains, coaches and team management at a pre-series meeting and told them to avoid inappropriate comments.

Broad added that any such comments could result in a code of conduct charge being laid against the individual responsible.

ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat said: “The whole world has been waiting for this series with great expectations and we all want it to be remembered for all the right reasons, because of great cricket.

“There has been a long build-up to the series but now it is time for the cricket on the field to do the talking as a demonstration that Test cricket remains the pinnacle of our great game. Time for the cricket to do the talking.”

It may be recalled that both teams had an acrimonious series whe India toured Down Under earlier. It came to a stage where the tour seemed to be in jeopardy after it was alleged that Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh made racist comments against Andrew Symonds.
