He had no answer to the Pakistani spinners and he even criticised DRS for being given lbw against Saeed Ajmal and Abdul Rehman on a number of occasions.

Coach Andy Flower’s decision to open the innings with Pietersen has worked wonders and it has helped the right-hander regain form.

Captain Alastair Cook says that these are just the glimpses of destructiveness Pietersen can cause to the opposition.

He scooped many awards including the man-of-the-match award on Tuesday night and he is enjoying opening the innings with Cook.

“There are no big issues as for as my batting is concerned. I go there and play according to the situation. I can say it was probably the best innings I’ve played,” Pietersen said.

Mushy has done a lot of hard work during these days and it is paying off. I just wanted to take the game deep, and I wanted to target bowlers as well. I think that was the key to the success. You need experience, lots of it, in order to keep the situation very simple — and back your ability.”
