Heriot Watt University Power to Victory in Interface Gulf Cup Cricket Tournament

ABU DHABI - The Elite Cup final was anticipated to be a high-voltage affair, but in the end Heriot Watt University fused out University of Wollongong in Dubai’s (UOWD) hopes with a thumping seven-wicket win in the Interface Gulf Cup cricket tournament at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium.

The match was expected to be an electrifying affair, especially with both teams going into the final with a three-match unbeaten record under their belts.

However, it was Heriot Watt, who set the momentum, not only from the time they won the toss and invited UOWD to bat, but they controlled the match with a consistent performance in all departments.

On the contrary, the UOWD batting was a let down, especially their top-order. The run-out of in form Vivek Thomas only compounded their agony from which they never rallied despite Manish Dhakan and Sufiyan Farooq’s efforts to revive the middle-order.

UOWD lost opener Pranav Arora with only four runs on the board, while Vivek (5) failed to beat Aqib’s throw 19 runs later. And just when Mubashir Wani and Sufiyan were getting their act together, Mubashir (18) holed out to Zuhair Bukhari, off Suhail Ahmed’s bowling.

Sufiyan and Manish raised a 58-run partnership before Sufiyan (31) was caught by Zuhair off Aqib Malik. Wicket-keeper batsman, Manish continued to bat in his customary fashion before scoring 56 runs off 63 balls.

Heriot Watt’s excellent bowling was also backed by couple of run outs as UOWD settled for 157 all out in 29.3 overs.

Heriot Watt’s, Qasim Zubair and Waqas Sabir claimed two wickets each.

In reply, Heriot Watt cruised along without taking much risk to seal the match by scoring 159 runs for the loss of three wickets in 25.4 overs.

Unlike their UOWD rivals, the Heriot innings revolved around some fine partnerships.

Zuhair Bukhari was the top scorer with 41 off 33 balls while Rushil Vallabh (37), Aqib Malik (20), Suhail Ahmed (29*) and Qasim Zubair (22*) contributed towards Heriot’s well deserved win.

ELITE CUP (final): Heriot Watt beat UOWD by 7 wkts.

UOWD 157 all out in 29.3 overs (Manish Dhakan 56, Sufiyan Farooq 31, Yash Makar 19, Mubashir Wani 18; Qasim Zubair 2/33, Waqas Sabir 2/18).

Heriot Watt 159 for 3 wkts in 25.4 overs (Zuhair Bukhari 41, Rushil Vallabh 37, Aqib Malik 20, Suhail Ahmed 29*, Qasim Zubair 22*; Pranav Arora 2/30).
