With the match reduced to 32 overs per side after a three-hour delay because of heavy showers, England adopted an attacking approach throughout with Kieswetter slogging four fours and two sixes in his superb knock.

Eoin Morgan (45) and Kevin Pietersen (26) weighed in with quick-fire scores on a flat pitch under gloomy skies to leave the Sri Lankans, who won the toss, a testing target to chase.

Lasith Malinga (3-40) had the best bowling figures for the tourists, while veteran Sanath Jayasuriya took a wicket in the final match of his distinguished international career.
