Clarke was on 57 after becoming the fifth batsman to reach his half century in the innings, guiding the touring side to 436 for six at lunch.

Australia were still 177 runs behind India's first innings 613 for seven declared but threatening the hosts' chances of a series-clinching win.

Cameron White was four not out at the interval.

Australia, 1-0 down in the series, lost two wickets while adding 98 runs with occasional spinner Virender Sehwag taking his fourth wicket and leg spinner Anil Kumble overcoming an injury to claim the other. Australia resumed on 338 for four and Clarke enjoyed a big reprieve when Ishant Sharma at mid-off dropped an easy catch off leg spinner Amit Mishra before he had added to his overnight score of 21.

The fifth-wicket partnership rose to 73 runs before Sehwag bowled Watson around his legs with a sharp off break. He returned figures of four for 83.

Watson hit eight fours, most slashed past third man, until he paid the price for shuffling too far across the stumps.

India, already without injured off spinner Harbhajan Singh, sorely missed Kumble, who left the field on day three after suffering a deep cut to his left little finger while trying to take a catch.

Kumble needed 10 stitches in the wound and finally returned midway through the morning with his hand heavily bandaged.

Clarke, who struck a century on his test debut in India in 2004, batted positively.

He swung Mishra over mid-wicket for six and lofted Kumble over mid-on for four to reach his fifty.

Kumble struck close to lunch when he foxed Brad Haddin (17) to have him stumped.

Australia's top four batsmen hit fifties with openers Matthew Hayden (83), Simon Katich (64), skipper Ricky Ponting (87) and Mike Hussey (53) leading a firm response to India's big total.

India won the second test in Mohali by a record 320 runs after the first test in Bangalore was drawn.

The fourth and final test starts in Nagpur on Nov. 6.
