The UAE's National Emergency, Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA) has reported that the Chinese Sinopharm vaccine shows 100 per cent protection against moderate and severe Covid-19 infections.

In a tweet, it said the vaccine achieved positive results, with the efficacy rate reaching 86 per cent.

This follows Phase III clinical trials of both the Sinopharm and Russia's Sputnik V vaccine, it was revealed at Tuesday's Covid-19 briefing held by the UAE Government.

The NCEMA added that the 'Hope Consortium' launched by the UAE in November is prepared to facilitate and support the distribution of 6 billion doses of vaccinations around the world, with the aim of increasing this capacity to 18 billion by the end of 2021.

Meanwhile, Dubai is planning to inoculate 70% of its population with the Covid-19 vaccine produced by Pfizer and BioNTech by the end of 2021, in a campaign free of charge for citizens and residents, a health official said on Tuesday.

The ramping up of the vaccination drive comes after the UAE has detected a “limited number” of cases of the new strain of Covid-19, a top official has said. The affected individuals had come from abroad.
