The UAE has vaccinated 86,770 residents against Covid-19 in the last 24 hours.

The country's Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) said the total doses administered now stands at 2.76 million. This takes the rate of doses per 100 people to 27.95.

The UAE's vaccine administration rate is the second highest globally after Israel.

The global economy is projected to grow 5.5 per cent in 2021 amid hopes of an eventual turnaround thanks to the vaccine rollouts, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

On Tuesday, Dr Farida Al Hosani, official spokesperson for the UAE Health Sector, noted that people may need to get Covid-19 vaccine every year.

She said that new variants of Covid-19 have emerged recently, and the more mutant the virus, the more is the potential need to vaccinate annually against it — much like a flu jab.

Several businesses in the country have announced freebies and major discounts for those who have received both doses of the Covid vaccine.
