There is no evidence to suggest that Covid-19 vaccines will not work against a new, more infectious strain of the coronavirus, a top UAE official has said.

The weekly Covid-19 briefing by the government official on Tuesday focussed on the new strain that is spreading through Europe, leading to at least 40 countries suspending flights to the United Kingdom.

Three Gulf states have also closed their borders as a precautionary measure.

Dr Omar Al Hammadi, the official spokesperson for the UAE Government, said: “Researchers have recorded that human immunity has strengthened against the original virus.”

Those returning to the UAE from abroad must adhere to all precautionary measures, including home quarantine, he added. “They must not mix with others and should seek medical help if they have any symptoms.”
