India has extended suspension of UK flights till January 7 over fears of a mutant Covid strain, according to media reports.

"A decision has been taken to extend the temporary suspension of flights to and from the United Kingdom till January 7 2021," said Hardeep Singh Puri, Union Civil Aviation Minister.

He added that a strictly regulated resumption of service would take place thereafter.

India has found 20 cases of a more infectious strain of the coronavirus in people arriving from Britain.

The country had suspended all flights from Britain until the end of the month over the infectious variant of the virus, but about 33,000 passengers had flown in from late November, before the ban was enforced, the ministry said.
