More than 560 volunteers have been registered till now by the Volunteer Center at the Department of Social Services in Sharjah (DSSS) to join in waging the war against coronavirus.
The volunteers were enrolled through the electronic volunteering platform affiliated with the department, under the slogan 'Be one of the contributors to fighting the spread of the corona epidemic'.
Hessa Al Hammadi, director of the department of community solidarity at DSSS, said: "The importance of launching this initiative comes in light of the unprecedented challenges the country faces." Each institution or individual must work together and cooperate to contribute in the efforts to fight this global epidemic," she added.
Al Hamadi revealed that until now more than 560 volunteers haven been registered through the electronic circle of volunteering. The registration opportunities are provided for all age groups to participate in volunteer initiatives, in the service of society, or employ their skills and specialties in various fields available, while excluding categories of pregnant women, the elderly, people with fragile immunity or chronic diseases.
She praised the large turnout of the registrants and the speed of interaction. It confirms the community's interest in volunteering in the service of the country. "The turnout shows the eagerness of those who volunteer their time and expertise to serve the country in times of crisis, as an expression of their loyalty and awareness and social commitment to helping others."
Al Hamadi pointed out that the role of DSSS is to mobilise volunteers who are willing, starting with registration and launching voluntary services and empowering community members and volunteer teams, while involving them in everything that would protect the society and its safety.
Al Hammadi pointed out that the electronic volunteering platform, launched at the beginning of 2019, is distinguished in launching, documenting and advertising volunteering opportunities and initiatives, and attracting volunteers from different age groups, and calculating volunteer hours. The platform also grants a certificate to every volunteer and documents the individual's work.
