However, the cap does not apply to members of the same family.
Responding to a resident's query on Twitter about the maximum number of people allowed in a car including the driver, the Dubai Police said: "3 people are allowed in one vehicle."
Responding to another query about a car having five occupants from the same family, the police tweeted: "5 members of the same family are allowed to travel in the same vehicle without being fined for violating the current three-people limit."

This comes as Dubai revised its sterilisation scheme timings to 11pm to 6am starting today as opposed to the previous 8pm to 6am. Radars are activated to catch motorists who are out unnecessarily during the sterilisation hours or cars that exceed the three-person limit during normal hours.
The limit on three persons per vehicle was introduced as a precautionary measure against the spread of Covid-19. It was later amended to allow more than three members of the same family to travel together.
Dubai extended mall timings till 10pm; revised public transport timings; and reopened most businesses, including cinemas, gyms and some education institutes on Wednesday.
