Pakistan President Dr Arif Alvi has reported positive for coronavirus Covid-19, he tweeted on Monday.

The news of the president contracting the virus comes amid a rapidly spreading third wave in Pakistan. Authorities have imposed strict restrictions and penalties to control the spread in parts of the country.

Dr Alvi took to Twitter to inform about his infection:

'I have tested positive for Covid-19. May Allah have mercy on all Covid affectees. Had 1st dose of vaccine، but antibodies start developing after 2nd dose that was due in a week. Please continue to be careful'

Earlier this month, Prime Minister Imran Khan had tested positive for Covid along with his wife. The PM and his wife self-quarantined as senior health officials monitored their health. PM continued working via virtual meetings.

Both Khan and Alvi have already received the first dose of a Covid vaccine.

Both leaders have urged the public to practice Covid rules implemented across the country as the health sector continues to get burdened with a spike in cases - the highest in recent days.
