India recorded 96,424 new coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours, taking its tally to 5.2 million, data from the federal health ministry showed on Friday.

India has been posting the highest single-day caseload in the world since early August, and seems on course to cross the United States as the country with the most number of cases.



Deaths in India have been relatively low, and it has a fatality rate of 1.62 per cent.

On Friday, the health ministry said 1,174 people died of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, taking total mortalities from the disease to 84,372.
Mumbai Police extends Section 144 till Sept 30
Meanwhile, on Thursday the Mumbai Police requested the people of the city not to panic as no new restrictions have been imposed and said all exemptions as per the state government's guidelines will continue, after Section 144 was imposed in the country's financial capital due to a rise in Covid-19 cases.
"The current prohibition on presence or movement in public places under Section 144 CrPC, is an extension of the previous prohibitory order. No new restrictions have been imposed. All exemptions as per Government of Maharashtra guidelines to continue," the Mumbai Police said in a tweet.
The DCP PRO also issued a clarification, saying, "The DCP Operations issued an order under Section 144 CrPC yesterday, applicable in Mumbai city up to September 30. It is issued as per guidelines of the state government on August 31, regarding easing of restrictions, 7 phase-wise opening of lockdown and no new restrictions imposed by Mumbai Police."
Earlier, Maharashtra Tourism and Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray asked the people not to panic.
"No need to panic. The order issued under section 144 CrPC is only an extension of the previous order issued on August 31. No new restrictions have been imposed by the Mumbai Police. Please share and do not panic," he tweeted.
Maharashtra remains the worst hit state followed by Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Delhi.

According to the data released by the MoHFW, the fatality rate has reached to 1.63 per cent while the recovery rate is at 78.64 per cent.

As per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 6,15,72,343 samples were tested up to September 17 of which 10,06,615 were tested in the past 24 hours.
