An Indian goldsmith was found dead in his room in Deira, Dubai, on Sunday, Khaleej Times has learnt.

The deceased, Shaji Alathum Kandiyil, 40, from Kannur district of Kerala, was running a jewellery workshop at the Gold Souq.

He is believed to have run into financial difficulties after the shop was closed due to the Covid-19 related restrictions.

He leaves behind a wife and two children aged seven and two.

Shaiju, brother of the deceased, told Khaleej Times that Shaji's body was found in his room on Sunday night.

"He was not responding to my calls. When I went and checked in his room, it was locked from inside," said Shaiju, who is also working in Dubai.

"I know he had some financial problems and he was depressed. But I had no clue that he would take his own life."

The police have closed the case and the body will be repatriated to Kerala on Friday, said the brother.
