How much to tell the kids about the Covid-19 coronavirus

Kids are so sensitive and smart they know enough about the topsy turvy world today without overloading their circuits.

My grandchildren's school sent a message recommending relevant reading for the children to better understand the fallout of Covid-19. We discussed whether it was necessary. Do they have to and under the ages of 7 be introduced to in-depth exercises on the virus or let them watch mindless Cartoon TV and read fantasies. We have decided in our wisdom to side-step the school's initiative and go with our horse sense in that there is no need for them to be armed with this medical data or its ramifications and worry them.

Kids are so sensitive and smart they know enough about the topsy turvy world today without overloading their circuits. They get their nuggets merely from overhearing the adults. Now there may be many parents who feel that a studied professional reading curriculum on the virus may have a salutary effect on children and give them a comfort zone. That may be so and there is nothing wrong with that, no cause to pass judgement on either choice, just exercising a personal option.

It wasn't a decision that we came to easy. After all if you factor in the school's endorsement there must have been so good reasons for them to advocate these books or websites or videos.

I was adamant that it wasn't necessary and we should duck it. My wife thought it should be discussed and the parents felt that if the peer group was reading this selection our kids shouldn't feel left out.

Finally, what broke in favour of a thank you but no thank you was our agreement that in this house we discuss such issues with the children whenever they ask piercingly pointed questions and we don't fob them off, we answer them and that's enough.
