It’s been nearly a year since the first case of Covid-19 was detected in India on January 10. The country also crossed the 10 million cases mark earlier this month. According to the Union Health Ministry, Covid-19 cases and deaths are on the decline in Indian five states – Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Kerala and Maharashtra – accounting for 56% of total active coronavirus cases.

Among the states where the Covid-19 positivity rate is rising fast is the southern state of Kerala which is a matter of concern as it had stabilised earlier this month but has once again touched 10% in the 14-day period between December 13-26.

If the positivity rate of confirmed Covid cases per 100 tests is above 5% (measured over a 14-day period), then Kerala is considered to be in the red zone. Besides Kerala, Goa is at 6%. But the scenario as much better compared to previous fortnight’s 6.4%. The all-India positivity rate has also come down to 3%.

Maharashtra, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan are the other states that have managed to bring down their positivity rates below 5%, compared to a fortnight back when previous all of them were in the red zone. Delhi at 1.4%, while Gujarat (1.8%) and Tamil Nadu (1.5%).

With increased testing and tracing of the infected people, states have been able to manage the pandemic in a more organised and reassuring manner.

The states with the lowest postivity rate (below 1%) are Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Assam and Bihar.
