Combating Covid-19: UAE to intensify coronavirus screenings

Dubai - 277 new cases and 23 recoveries registered in the country; Dubai launches drive to sterilise 800 mosques.

The UAE will intensify screenings across the country as the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) reported 277 new cases of Covid-19 on Monday.
With 23 recoveries announced on Monday, the total number of recoveries is 167. An Asian resident was declared dead, taking the death toll to 11.
Speaking at a Press conference, Dr Farida Al Hosani, spokeswoman for MoHAP, said authorities are intensifying screening procedures and extending the testing scope to include all UAE nationals and residents.
"This will give a big boost to our successful efforts to contain all infected cases, significantly reduce infections, and curb the virus."
Dr Al Hosani said the UAE Government is working closely with the private sector and all outlets to boost e-shopping and increase their capacities. "We are working together to find solutions for all challenges within 48 hours."
Dubai Taxi Corporation said it will soon install separation screens in its fleet of taxis as part of preventive measures against coronavirus. This will provide greater levels of protection to both the driver and passengers.
Meanwhile, the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department in Dubai has launched a capgaign to sterilise 800 mosques. The move is part of the disinfection operations it is conducting from April 1 to 11 using best in class products.
277 new cases confirmed
The UAE has confirmed 277 new cases of Covid-19, taking the total to 2,076 cases, according to Dr Farida Al Hosani, spokesperson for the Ministry of Health and Prevention (Mohap).

During a media briefing on Monday, Dr Al Hosani said with 23 new recoveries, the total number of recoveries stood at 167, while an Asian patient was declared dead, taking the total number of deaths to 11.

Dr Hosani said there was no need to worry about medical supplies. "As always affirmed by our prudent leadership, all the required medical supplies are available."

She urged the residents to mark the Hag Al Laila celebrations in a different way this year, considering the current situation. The festival that marks the 15th night of the lunar month of Shaaban will be celebrated over two days.

"This year, we need refrain from gatherings, keep kids at home and share no gifts." Dr Hosani also urged the public to wear face masks whenever they go outdoors. "Do not use a disposable mask more than once."

In reply to media questions, Dr Hosani said anyone can contract Covid-19 if he or she mingles with those who are infected even though they are not showing any symptoms. "Therefore, wearing masks, physical distancing and sterilisations are critically important."

Though all hospitals receive suspicious cases, some hospitals have been turned into Covid-19 quarantines, while some others have been dedicated for testing and screening. "If you are suffering from breathing issues, immediately go to the nearest emergency section."

Responding to question, Dr Hosani said it's not scientifically proven that Covid-19 could be transmitted via flies. "It is mostly transmitted from one person to another."

She also urged families not to take their children outdoors. "Only one person can go for shopping, that too wearing a facemask, using hand sanitiser, and strictly observing physical distancing."

Dr Hosani stated that Covid-19 tests are available in all hospitals. "However, priority is given to those suffering from respiratory issues, senior people and patients with chronic diseases," she said, noting that more screening centres are opened to screen all Emirati nationals and residents.

Dr Hosani said the UAE authorities are intensifying screening procedures, and extending the testing scope to include all Emirati nationals and residents.

"This will give a big boost to our successful efforts to contain all infected cases, significantly reduce infections and curb the spread."

She said the UAE government is so keen in such exceptional circumstances to closely follow and meet the needs of all people, including Emiratis, residents and visitors.

"We are well aware of the ongoing pressures, mainly e-shopping and delivery time, particularly after the extension of movement restrictions," she said.   

The UAE government is working closely with the private sector and all outlets to ease e-shopping and increase their capacities, she affirmed.
