A few more weeks of this diet, and along with our finances also going numb will be our synapses. Our brains will not be able to absorb any more.

What if this Covid-19 pandemic had hit the world 50 years ago, long before the advent of social platforms and the mobile phones and instant and mass dispensation of information? A time when there was no such thing as fake news and morphed visuals and a million trolls hurting and harming and pouring liquid malice into inflicted wounds?

Their vicious nature propelled by folk devils, which is the official name for you and I, who so willingly and wittingly help the trolls by spreading their poison and causing untold stress on the systems that are in place to protect us. Verification has become a joke, only our own values the measure of what we wish to believe and what we decide to propagate.

It is a moot point, but without folk devils like the masses have now become maybe Covid-19 would not have been so devastating.

While ignorance may not be total bliss, in that set up maybe the absence of an endless media blitz and no trolling would have kept the virus in check. I just can't help feeling that the brouhaha and the screaming invasion of our minds has somehow propelled the fear psychosis speedily and dramatically. Without any effort to trivialise the enormity of the situation, we have been made breathless and beaten, as if it is demanded that we be helpless and fragile.

A few more weeks of this diet, and along with our finances also going numb will be our synapses. Our brains will not be able to absorb any more.

Perhaps it is time to slow down this media-cum-online onslaught and ease the waves of panic. More mental anguish is generated by social platforms than Covid-19.

As a human race, signs of tiring are already there. Try a 9pm clanging of pots and pans or a candlelit vigil... that is all passe. All people want now is a break and some sanity by way of peace of mind.

One way to start is to stop volunteering as a folk devil. Don't add to the confusion.
