Coronavirus: UAE reports 1,231 Covid-19 cases, 1,051 recoveries, 2 deaths
The authorities urged the public to avoid social gatherings and follow social distancing guidelines.
The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention on Saturday reported 1,231 cases of the Covid-19 coronavirus, along with 1,051recoveries. Two deaths were also reported.
This brings the total number of cases in the country to 97,760 and recoveries to 87,122. Nearly 117,800 new Covid-19 tests were carried out, the ministry added.
In a statement, the ministry stressed its aim to continue expanding the scope of testing nationwide to facilitate the early detection of coronavirus cases and carry out the necessary treatment.
Leading the way for global testing rates, the UAE has conducted over 9.9 million tests till date as part of the country's massive screening programmes to combat the spread of Covid-19. However, with a spike in Covid-19 cases in recent days, the ministry has urged the public to follow all preventive guidelines.
As the number of coronavirus cases is increasing in the country amid the threat of a second wave, a team of researchers from Khalifa University in Abu Dhabi has developed a portable Covid-19 testing kit, which offers rapid and accurate results. The testing kit is the size of a smartphone and can deliver accurate results in less than 45 minutes. The kit uses a PCR-based technique that provides rapid, sensitive, and specific detection of the Covid-19 virus in a cost-effective manner.
It was also announced yesterday that the Emirati travellers flying to Dubai from anywhere in the world are now exempted from pre-flight Covid-19 tests, the emirate's Supreme Committee of Crisis and Disaster Management said on Friday as it announced changes to travel protocols. Dubai-bound UAE citizens will no longer have to undergo PCR tests in the country they are travelling from, regardless of the period of their stay. They will only be required to get the test done upon their arrival in the emirate, according to the revised guidelines rolled out on Friday.
