Oman's Ministry of Education has refuted pictures and voice messages that have been circulating on social media which suggest that students and teachers in some schools across the Sultanate have been infected by the novel coronavirus.
According to Times of Oman, Dr. Saif Al Ma'amari, Acting Under-Secretary of Education for Educational Planning and Human Resources Development and Chairman of the Crisis Management Committee at the Ministry of Education, dispelled the rumors as baseless and advised against spreading such claims.
"We can confirm that there is no truth to what is being circulated in social media. It is very unfortunate that parents and our children students in schools are intimidated," he said.
"These rumors will affect the course of the educational process in the Sultanate and affect the Omani society in general and students in particular."
The Ministry of Education has additionally ruled out the possibility of closing schools in the wake of the outbreak.
"We are in constant contact with the Ministry of Health. All schools in Oman are working normally and there is no reason why we should close schools," Saif noted.
