Beat those Valentine’s Day clichés

Forget the varying hues of red, the perky abstracts and obligatory gift-giving options plastered all over the city, it’s time to enjoy the day — not out of spite, or for being single or lonely, but do it for loving yourself! You deserve it!

Ah! Valentine’s Day — a global occasion dedicated to lovers and all things red. Greeting cards take on quirky messages, dining and retail outlets spread out their couple deals, while brands showcase their bestsellers as gifts for a chance to make their way into the homes of one’s beloved. Everything is decorated with hearts and balloons, relaying a simple message of love in its grandest form.
BUT not everyone’s into that. Not everyone is in a loving relationship or has family members to play a poetic ode to. If you’re one among many that are put off by anything that symbolises Valentine’s Day, read on!
Forget the varying hues of red, the perky abstracts and obligatory gift-giving options plastered all over the city, it’s time to enjoy the day — not out of spite, or for being single or lonely, but do it for loving yourself! You deserve it!
Here are ways you can treat yourself to a wonderful evening, while enjoying the best of the season:
1 Rejuvenate: With the hustle and bustle of daily life, taking care of yourself is often on low priority. Take time off to relax to pamper yourself. Head to the nearest spa and treat yourself to some tender loving care. Take advantage of some V-Day special deals, and opt for a hammam or massage. If you’d prefer something more intimate at home, fill up a tub with aromatic bath oils and soak in the goodness with some classical music.
2 Detox: It’s never too late to turn over a new leaf. Why not use this occasion to drop bad habits and adopt a healthier lifestyle? Try to add at least 15 minutes of exercise to your daily routine, or whip up a recipe that could help cleanse your system of all toxins. Don’t let the pounds weigh you down. Step out of your comfort zone and challenge yourself!
3 Pamper: Welcome a glam new you. Look and feel great as you peel away the stress of the week and indulge in some much-needed spoiling sessions. Get your nails done or get a new colour and cut. For the gentlemen, try a new shave for your beard, or try to grow a gnarly moustache for a change. We’re sure Pinterest has loads of suggestions to experiment with. Just make sure your hairdresser is well-informed of the plan!
4 Zone makeover: Out with the old, in with the new. Since we’re changing different aspects of ourselves, why not give your home a makeover too. Sort out the junk and donate whatever you don’t need to charity. Spice up your room with some colour. You don’t have to splurge on fancy things to make it cosy; a simple change such as a setting up a funky curtain or laying down a string of fairy lights on your desk can make a big difference.
5  Party: The café and club scene in Dubai is so diverse that we actually do have places that are exclusively anti-Valentines. The hottest hangout joints with fantastic music are just a quick Internet search away, each hosting a special theme that celebrates life, and of course, discounts where you could end up with complimentary drinks and dinner too! Gather your best mates and join in on the fun. Dress up in your favourite wear and get out there to party!
6 Value thyself: After you’ve had your dose of fun, take time to re-evaluate your priorities in life and realise your true worth. You do not need a significant other to achieve happiness, or an occasion to appreciate yourself. You can be your own best friend or your worst enemy. It’s all about perspective. Dream big, aim high and never give up on your beliefs. Tap into your potential and soar!
