As the UAE is enduring sizzling temperatures there are a few things that we can keep in mind to keep our pets like Bruno comfortable and safe. Apart from the tips listed below, keep an eye on your furry friends to see if they have heatstroke - excessive drooling, laboured breathing or seizures could be an indication. Keep your vet's number handy in case of an emergency.

. First off - and this is a no-brainer - always, always keep fresh water for your pet. You can get steel bowls with a wide base that don't tip over, and plastic ones that have a bit of a rubber strip that anchors them to the floor.

. The timing of the morning and evening walks for dogs needs to be changed. The roads and pavements are too hot for the pads of their feet - which can get burnt - during the day. If you place the back of your hand on the surface that your dog walks on for five to 10 seconds and find it too hot for you, then it's too hot for your dog. Walking earlier in the morning when it's relatively cool and after sundown would be ideal. You can also walk your dog on a grassy patch.

. Definitely carry water for your dog when you go for a walk. You don't need a fancy device;  a simple bottle of fresh water and a plastic bag that you can pour the water into will suffice.

. Dogs love a swim in summer - so, if your groomer or doggie day-care centre has a pool, try to use the facilities as a special treat for your furry friend.

. Absolutely do NOT leave your dog in the car even for a few minutes.

. A couple of ice cubes in the water dish are nice.

. Your vet can give the best advice on getting the dog's fur trimmed.

. In the UAE, it is not ideal to have pets that have double fur coats like Huskies, Akitas and others. Please do not buy these breeds from irresponsible breeders, who should not bring them into the city in the first place.

. While we're on the subject, why not keep a few bowls of water out for the birds in a shady spot too? And do remember to refill the bowls everyday.
