IT WAS CLEAR why Dubai was Shah Rukh Khan’s favourite city to perform in when a roaring crowd went out of control at his debut Access All Areas concert on Sunday. The superstar was clearly in a mood to enjoy with his fans and there was every reason to expect the best from him.

More than 5000 people turned up for the concert at Dubai Sports City cricket stadium – a rather low number considering it was a mega Bollywood show with the likes of Deepika Padukone, Madhuri Dixit, Jacqueline Fernandez, Yo Yo Honey Singh and Indian Idol contestant Meiyang Chang performing. Promoters of the event had earlier billed it as the biggest Bollywood concert in Dubai and in all likelihood the fact that most people had to return to work the next day after a long weekend, caused a smaller crowd to turn up for the concert.

However, for those who turned up – SRK did not disappoint one bit. He was at his usual best, hugging fans, shaking a leg with dancers and performing some of his finest dance moves to entertain the crowd. His ‘random’ pick of a few fans from the audience to get up close and personal with him, proved a big hit as well.

However, the hugely popular Bollywood star gave security staff a nightmare, as thousands of fans swarmed the stage at one point, forcing the show to be halted for a few minutes.

Neeti Mohan’s solo performance will go down as one of the better acts during the night as she held the show together after the minor security lapse.

Rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh also got in the act with the crowd and his improved dancing skills were clearly obvious during the show’s first half. He also performed his latest hit Blue Eyes, leaving the crowd in a frenzy.

Deepika Padukone was a hit-and-miss with the crowds as the actress was clearly a support act. Her dancing skills were no match for Madhuri Dixit who was a class apart with her expressions and well practiced sequences.

The show was a complete entertainer with pyrotechnics, background dancers and star interactions with fans at regular intervals.

Earlier during the night, Jacqueline Fernandez set the stage on fire with her sensuous dance moves. Her opening act was followed by Deepika Padukone who performed on Titli (Chennai Express), Badtameez dil and Balam Pichkari (Yeh Jawani hai Deewani).

“I am excited since I do very few live shows,’ said Deepika Padukone ahead of the show.

SRK congratulated UAE residents on the occasion of the National Day and he was joined by other stars for the show’s finale and a special rendition of Lungi Dance on stage.
