Pakistan comedian Umar Sharif's daughter died after she developed serious complications following an alleged illegal kidney transplant at an undisclosed location in Azad Jammu & Kashmir.
Umar Sharif's son, Jawad Umar, filed a written complaint accusing Dr Fawad Mumtaz of causing his sister Hira Sharif's death. While Dr Fawad currently works at the Lahore General Hospital and has been involved in the illegal trade of human organs, an official told Dawn.
Following the complaint, a joint team of Federal Investigation Agency and Human Organ Transplant Authority (HOTA) on Tuesday raided Dr Fawad Mumtaz's residence in Bahria Town, Lahore. However when officials reached his house, it was learnt he had fled from there to evade arrest.
Jawad Umar revealed that Dr Fawad had charged Rs3.4 million for the kidney transplant following which his sister developed serious complications a week later. However Jawad Umar did not comment whether the family was aware about the illegal kidney transplant.
Dr Fawad was arrested in April 2017 for performing illegal kidney transplant on foreigners including Jordanian, Libyan and Omani citizens.
