EMINEM'S LATEST ALBUM, Kamikaze, may have received mixed reviews upon its release, notably from Rolling Stone who only gave it 2.5 stars, but many also praised its reboot of the rapper's original sound and that is what we're most looking forward to hearing during his upcoming October 25 Abu Dhabi show. The original Real Slim Shady is what we know and love and that's what we demand.
We can't be the only ones who go to concerts hoping to hear the classics, can we? Of course, witnessing a live performance of new material is enjoyable; like trying a new appetiser on your favourite restaurant's menu. But that's not why you go to the eatery is it? You go to chow down on your preferred dish - the reason you always make the journey. We unashamedly celebrate tunes from a time when 'music sounded like music' (a.k.a. when we were younger) and Marshall Mathers constituted a large portion of the tracks we enjoyed. You can therefore understand our glee - probably the wrong word to use when discussing the surly Detroit artist- at the fact he will be heading to the UAE capital to perform at the du Arena, Yas Island, later in the year. Sure, a couple of tracks are expected from his 2018 album given the show is eponymously titled Kamikaze, but we have a sneaky suspicion the 47-year-old (when he reaches our shores) will bust out more than a fair share of the back catalogue that makes up his 130 million album and 389 million single sales to get us on our feet. So, let's take a look back at our top Eminem moments in order to psych ourselves up, shall we?
Lose yourself
Those guitar chords strike up, your palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy: and then he enters the stage. Can you imagine? Not only a formative 2002 film, Eminem's 8 Mile provided the soundtrack for that year. When we heard the signature Loose Yourself riff, we were all Jimmy "B-Rabbit" rapping for a better life, no matter where we were. A grown-up film centred on real issues and featuring fine performances, we can't wait to relive every act with a few of the songs.
We're made up with this
Waltzing down memory lane, we'd completely forgotten 2009's We Made You. How could we? Displaying Eminem's typical wit and flair for satire, both the tune and video were enormous at the time. We think it is ripe for a comeback in this show.
Collaboration station
Top of the Pops for us, Love The Way You Lie ft. Rihanna has to be played. We don't care how they do it, but hopefully they can pipe some RiRi vocals into the arena on the night to give us at least a taste of this incredible work.
Without him
We haven't had the privilege of a live Eminem performance in the UAE since 2012 and it has felt so empty. One of our all-time Mathers hits of choice is Without Me accompanied by a video starring long-time collaborator Dr Dre.
The stats
Eminem was Nielsen SoundScan's top-selling artist of the 2000s with 32.2 million albums sold in that decade in the US alone. He was also named Billboard's Artist of the Decade for the same period: 2000 through 2009. Eminem has won 15 Grammy Awards and an Academy Award. His 2010 album, Recovery, was the first album in the US to ever go digitally platinum. His most recent album, Kamikaze, was released on August 31, 2018, selling 434,000 copies in its first week.
