Comedian Jack Whitehall may be viewing his upcoming January Dubai World Trade Center Stood Up gig less as a job and more a potential relocation scouting trip if his beloved Arsenal Football Club plumb even greater depths. An abysmal start to this year’s Premier League season leaves his chosen north London tribe languishing in 15th position (at time of writing), garnering a meagre 14 points from 14 games. To compound the avid Gooner’s misery, archrivals Tottenham Hotspur are riding high near the top of the table under the expert tutelage of former Chelsea and Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho.
“It’s horrendous. I may not come back from Dubai,” Whitehall said when asked about AFC’s state as we spoke about his show over Zoom last weekend. “I’ll see how the results go over Christmas, but if Arsenal lose any more games and Tottenham win any more, then I may consider moving on a permanent basis to Dubai.”
This comment came before Saturday’s defeat to Everton.
“If Tottenham were to win the league I wouldn’t want to be anywhere where there was a television or phone signal or anyone that can speak the English language,” he said about the Haringey opponents’ continuing success. “I may look into Outer Mongolia to live in a hut as such time as when normality returns to the Premier League. Or we can find somewhere in the desert there (UAE)!”
Whitehall concluded by somewhat reinforcing Arsenal fans’ reputation for an at times pessimistic outlook regarding whether there were any silver lining.
“I keep telling myself this is rock bottom,” he said. “But then they pull away a curtain and show me another tier of despair.”
Tickets for the additional January 13 World Trade Centre show are still available on the Dubai Calendar App, Platinum List & 800 Tickets.
