After making it clear that he holds a Canadian passport earlier this year, Bollywood star Akshay Kumar has revealed that he has applied for an Indian passport and citizenship.
According to Bollywood Hungama, the actor faced backlash earlier this year after he didn't vote in the Lok Sabha elections this year because of his citizenship. Kumar revealed that he had applied for an Indian passport and citizenship at the 17th Hindustan Times Leadership Summit in Delhi.
The star said that he had taken the Canadian passport after his first 14 films flopped.
"I did this because I feared that maybe my career in Bollywood was finished," he said. "However, as luck would have it, my 15th film became a hit. And then I never looked back."
The star, who is constantly trolled online over his citizenship, reiterated that he was saddened by the fact that he had to prove he was Indian using something as small as a passport.
He stressed his point by reminding audiences that his wife, Twinkle Khanna, and their son were both Indian and never changed their nationality.
"Everybody in my family is all Indian. I pay my taxes here. My life is here."
