When you know exactly how a movie is going to play out and end from the trailer alone, it’s usually not a great indicator of a picture that will stand the test of time. Stilted dialogue, obvious historical tropes and an attempt at shoehorning in modern points of discussion, no matter how well-intentioned, all add up to a big sigh from us even if Derek Jacobi does feature. The film’s focus is on Rani of Jhansi (Devika Bhise) who led a female-warrior uprising against the East India Company in 1857. Rotten Tomatoes gives it 24%

If this feel-good Egyptian release doesn’t have you singing and wiggling in your seat to the infectious soundtrack and dance numbers, you’ll be in floods of tears when the good deeds protagonist Um Abdullah (Lucy) carries out are returned to her by members of the vibrant community. There are so far no ratings.

The movie that kicked-off this live action remake craze in which we find ourselves, 2016’s The Jungle Book proved to the world, and Disney, taking (pretty-much) a shot-for-shot remake of a cartoon and putting photo-realistic animals and actual humans in the frames could make money. And what a lot of money! You know the story, so you don't need us to explain it here, but if you’ve never seen this version, it gets our hearty endorsement. Rotten Tomatoes gives it 94%

Much the same as The Jungle Book, Beauty and The Beast (2017) follows an identical plot to the 1991 animated classic. Again, you (and more importantly your kids) will have fun. Be its guest. Rotten Tomatoes gives it 71% david@khaleejtimes.com
