Yayo Aguila happy life

NOT EVERYONE knows what their mission in life is. Yayo Aguila is one of the lucky ones - because even at the young age of 16, she knew what she was meant to be, and that is a wife and mother.

Yayo married her Bagets co-star, William Martinez, at 16. “I was very young then, but I felt that I was ready. I knew, even before, where I wanted to go and what I wanted to do, and that was to be a wife,” said Yayo when we met up with her at the Timezone Celebrity Open held at the Glorietta Activity Center recently. Yayo was accompanied by husband William, while their children—the eldest of whom is Patricia, now 21 and a graduating Communication Arts student at Miriam College—were in school.

Despite being so young, William and Yayo were able to make a success of their marriage. To date, they have been together for more than 20 years. In 2009, they will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary.

“Never. It just never occurred to me to leave him,” she says. “And right now, we’re doing okay.”

And how did their kids take it? They’re okay too,” reports Yayo. “At first, they would hear people talking about what happened in school, but they were brought up to know when they should react to things and when they shouldn’t. My kids are very smart, and they handled the whole thing very well.” Marrying young worked for Yayo, but she wouldn’t advise it for everybody. But what if one of her own kids, particularly the eldest, Patricia, told her that she wanted to get married? Yayo says that Patricia—who is in a two-year-old relationship—is already of age (she’s 21), “but knowing her, she won’t want to get married early. She has so many goals and plans for her life. But whatever she wants is really up to her. As parents, we can only guide them, not live their lives for them.”
