What do the critics know?

After being one of the most anticipated movies of the year Mother! starring one of the most liked (though slightly overrated) actresses Jennifer Lawrence and directed by Darren Aronofsky  (Director of the critically acclaimed Black Swan) has quickly turned into (allegedly) the biggest flop of the year. Where it was anticipated to rake in $100 million in its opening week the film is now only expected to make $8 million in the US after critics hated it. Perplexed, confused, irritated, annoyed, angry people can't make sense of the film and critics have been bashing it.

I'm not a fan of horror films but when I saw the trailer I was intrigued. The premise of the story was enticing while the supporting cast is impressive including Javier Bardem, Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer. But could this be the best part of the movie? The trailer? Should I listen to the critics? Quick Answer: No.

I think we put too much trust in other people's opinions especially critics. Some of my favorite movies were box office "flops". In 2012 the film John Carter starring Taylor Kitsch and directed by Andrew Stanton was expected to break the office but instead it was unashamedly bashed by critics and the film got a bad rep for being a bad film - it wasn't. I watched it despite the word FLOP being repeated in every headline. The movie, which is based on the underrated sci-fi and fantasy novels by Edgar Rhys Burroughs took the best of the first book and was packed with action, humour and some amazing special affects. Did the movie have its flaws - yes, every movie does. But did it deserve the flak it got? Absolutely not.

Another more recent film that was bashed for absolutely no reason was Valerian and The City of a Thousand Planets. Another sci-fi epic, directed by the amazing Luc Besson and starring Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne was based on a popular comic of the same name. It was to date the most expensive independent movie ever made. Again, critics bashed it, starting a domino effect of people judging the film based on the general consensus that it was a flop. Well flop the floppers I say! I'm not sure what that means but Valerian and The City of a Thousand Planets was a brilliant piece of film, a wonderful lesson in story telling and adventure and mix of genres that many young filmmakers can learn from and movie goers can enjoy! Again the film isn't without its flaws but I'm sorry movie critics of the world - why don't you try writing and directing a film. I'm sure for many of you it's hard to compile a short story without facing a lot of harsh criticism.

In a way I can understand why we listen to critics and the opinions of others to choose what film to watch. It's easier for us to make decisions when there are so many movies out there when our time is limited. But here's a piece of advice - don't listen to the critics. Watch a trailer and then make up your own mind.
