‘The Reel Dubai’ competition invites amateur filmmakers

The Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) announced ‘The Reel Dubai,’ a new short film competition held in partnership with the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing and Samsung. The winning film will win its creator the opportunity to showcase their film at the 68th Cannes Film Festival.

This competition will be held as part of the #MyDubai initiative created by Shaikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council, which invites residents and visitors to share their experiences of life in Dubai.

Aspiring filmmakers are invited to submit a short film, which should exemplify the Dubai experience, along with examples of their previous work. The synopses can be for documentaries, fiction or animation, with the judging panel encouraging diversity. Submissions must be made between January 25 and February 21, 2015 on the DIFF website.

Six contestants will be selected, and will have the opportunity to work with accomplished local filmmakers who will mentor them through the production cycle, with each film being created on the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. All six films will be showcased at a special screening in March with one participant winning a trip to the 68th Cannes Film Festival where his/her short film will be screened in The Short Film Corner.

Mentors for the contest are Nayla Al Khaja, acclaimed film director, screenwriter and producer; Ali F. Mostafa, who recently released his new feature film From A to B; and Mohammed Saeed Harib, creator of the popular ‘FREEJ’ animated series and most recently directed one of the chapters in Kahlil Gibran's ‘The Prophet’.

DIFF Chairman Abdulhamid Juma said: “It gives us great pleasure to collaborate in offering yet another platform to showcase the ways that Dubai is special to its residents.”

Issam Kazim, CEO of Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing added: “We are delighted to support ‘The Reel Dubai’ and provide another platform through which people can share their #MyDubai story. With the competition open to creators of documentaries, fiction and animation, we look forward to a diverse range of films which reflect the diversity of life in our emirate.”
