She recently met Sudhir at her residence, at which meeting she was said to be finalising on shooting dates.

But suddenly, somewhere, something has gone very wrong. After his meeting with Rani, the media presumed that she was in, but Mishra declared otherwise. He said he had not yet finalised things with her. People are betting that this could have upset Rani, who was thinking it would be a good idea to do this role. A friend says that she could not have taken on this film anyway, since she has no availability of dates right now.

The biggest reason for speculation though, it something else altogether. Everyone knows that Rani is extremely close to Sanjay Leela Bhansali after Black and now Saawariyan. He having earlier done Devdas, one wonders whether she asked his advice on doing Mishra’s film. Did his views or her loyalty to his camp not permit her to accept this assignment after all?

Whatever the case, Sudhir is a happy man today declaring that he always actually had Lara Dutta in mind for the role of Paro (played by Aishwarya in Bhansali’s version). The other role of Chandramukhi (which Madhuri played) will most probably see Soha Ali Khan penciled in by Mishra.

Of course the lucky guy who gets to play Devdas opposite these two beauties is none other than Shiney Ahuja. Since Sudhir and he make for a great work combination, we guess there was never any doubt him being the chosen one.

This film is produced by Pritish Nandy’s PNC and is visualised to be on a grander scale than Bhansali’s version. Sudhir combines the classic love story with a political twist to make it more interesting than Bimal Roy’s original and Bhansali’s follow-up version, says Trade Analyst Amod Mehra.
