The immensely talented French artist will display her latest paintings at the chic coffee shop Rumours at Coral Deira, Dubai from July 13, 2005.

Aptly titled Emotions, the exhibition is big on the pleasures and power of colour with blazing hues of every kind in geometric shapes. Burning reds, shocking pinks, brilliant yellows, lively greens and throbbing blues — colours so rich that they breathe joy and passion. Of course, it’s the colours that get you first but on closer look you discover emotions stronger than words can describe.

Says Stef, “My paintings reflect my emotions and to portray these colours are absolutely crucial. It could be a fleeting moment of beauty, a look, an expression — basically, anything that moves me. I have never shivered from making images that are beautiful. We do, after all, live in an amazingly beautiful world. When I start a canvas, I simply want to play with certain colours however bold or brash they may seem. I don’t know at that stage what the outcome would be. But as I begin to mix colours, I start to control the canvas... or, may be it’s the other way round. Through the first colours and shadows, a new world, a new dream takes shape in front of my eyes.”

Stef can pinpoint the exact moment when her love affair with paints began but admits that she had a lot to learn when she started. “The first time I began painting was about seven years back when I moved into my new apartment in Paris. The walls of my home looked very stark so I decided to add a little colour there and I must say I was surprised by the outcome.” At that time she was like a child with a new toy. Excited and passionate, she found it impossible to stop. “My style has developed and evolved a great deal since then. Over time I think one arrives naturally at one’s own simplicity, rigour and sobriety.”

Born and brought up in France, Stef is a self-taught artist. She moved to Dubai about 4 years back but continues to paint with the same passion. I grew up in a very creative environment as I come from Montmartre which is known to be the intellectual and artistic centre of Paris. I was, as a result, exposed to all kinds of art.”
