The contest is held every two years and recognises kitchen and interior designers, architects, and builders for advancing outstanding kitchen design. It was the first time that the competition was open to Asians.

A panel of judges, composed of the who's who in American design and architecture industry, picked the work of 30-year-old Cara Marie Salangsang-Marcelo for the international category from more than 1,000 entires from professional kitchen designers all over the world.

Marcelo, who works as manager of the Kitchen Division of Focus Global, provider of top-of-the-line international products and services in the Philippines, will have her design featured in the book Great American Kitchens. Her work will be published along with the winning entries from four other categories. The entries were judged on the aesthetical and functional use of the space and the placement of the Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances along with innovative kitchen design.

Marcelo tailor-made her design for a family who owns one of the biggest restaurant-chains in the Philippines.

The family wanted to transform their kitchen into a more welcoming space, not only where they can break bread, but entertain guests as well and concoct new recipes to add to their menu.
