Talent runs in the family

THERE’S NO mistaking whose niece she is. She brings to mind visions of Claudine Barretto during her Ang TV days. This physical resemblance was one of the reasons why she was cast in Walang Kapalit—the teleserye in which Claudine stars with Piolo Pascual.

Julia Barretto is the daughter of Claudine’s older sister Marjorie with comedian Dennis Padilla; therefore, her last name is actually Padilla. She’s just using her famous aunt’s (and her equally famous mother’s) maiden name as her screen name. But aside from their physical features and the maiden name-as-screen name thing, does Julia have anything else in common with her aunt and mother?

According to those who worked with the budding actress on Walang Kapalit, (which, incidentally, marks her acting debut as the younger self of her aunt Claudine’s character Melanie), the answer is yes.

At a recent Press conference, the show’s director Wenn Deramas, praised his new protégé. “Julia has a certain spunk about her, and she registers well on screen,” he says. “In fact, she reminds me of Serena Dalrymple, who in her prime was one of ABS-CBN’s best young actresses.”

He adds that she can deliver her lines in a way that belies her age. “Most kids I’ve worked with in the past deliver their lines in a babyish way, but her delivery is excellent.”
