Straight from the art

IN PURSUIT of Arabic calligraphy and ornamentation preservation, the Sharjah Department of Culture and Information has organised a one-week students Arabic calligraphy and ornamentation exhibition that kicked off last Monday.

Dubbed ‘Inspirations’, the student exhibition is aimed at inspiring the new generations to preserve the classical Arabic calligraphy and ornamentation.

It is being sponsored by His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah who pays special attention to the cultural heritage of the Islamic nation, in all its forms and in particular Arabic calligraphy.

“Arabic calligraphy represents the strong foundation in the diffusion of the Islamic culture all over the world. This acts as the linking factor to activate these forms of art work which in turn formalises the basis for a rich visual culture,” said Yusuf Aydabi the director of planning at the Department.

He said that the Directorate of Art at the Department of Culture and information is proud to observe and comply with Shaikh Sultan’s guidance and interpret it in organising conscious courses for students in the centre for Arabic calligraphy and ornamentation, who study under skillful teachers and experts with distinguishable experiences.

The exhibition features a number of these students work comprising of classical Arabic calligraphy, typography and Islamic ornamentation. “Through displaying these works we hope we could achieve some of the aspiration of creating an attentive generation vigilant to its cultural history and utilising it in rich artworks to mirror the level of development achieved and the significant stature of their country’s culture along with the Art of other nations,” Aydabi added.

Meanwhile, the Emirate of Sharjah has been invited to the International Arts Exhibition that starts today through to March 2, in Germany. The developments are part of the vision of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qassimi to transform Sharjah into the Cultural Capital of the Arab world.
