Stewart, McKellen won’t return for X-Men: Apocalypse

Patrick Stewart has confirmed that he and fellow first generation mutant Ian McKellen won’t appear in the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse.

Stewart made the announcement during an interview on Larry King Now, first reported by Yahoo Movies. “I was learning quite a lot more about it last night and it is going to be looking very much at the earlier lives of all our characters,” Stewart told King. “And so I don’t think we’ll be making an appearance.”

While the last X-Men film, Days of Future Past, featured both Stewart’s Professor X and McKellen’s Magneto as well as their young counterparts, James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender, thanks to its time travel plot, they won’t return for the new installment.

However, the cliffhanger ending of Days of Future Past hinted that Professor X will appear in a future installment so he could possibly make an appearance in Channing Tatum’s Gambit and/or Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool spinoffs or a later X-Men sequel. X-Men: Apocalypse, directed by Bryan Singer, hits theatres on May 27, 2016.
