he feels like doing more such movies, which are emotional in content, yet stirring in their own way. A chat with the actor.

So, you are quite charged up about Umar.

Umar is one of the few films that has had me thinking. It depicts reality in a subtle way. I think such films, which touch upon subjects like old age problems should be made more often. I think Baghban succeeded in that. It was a very touching film.

The same way, Umar stands on traditional values — values which have lost over the span of time. Umar is about respecting elders and old people. It makes one realise the importance of parents in one's life.

After all, they are the one who persevere to give us a great future. As children, we have double responsibility towards them.

How commercially viable is Umar?

See, the objective isn't to make only a commercial film and make money on it. Umar has been made with a sense of responsibility. Director Karan (Razdan) has shown amazing maturity and he has made a great film — at least I can say that with surety.

But Karan's past record includes films like Hawas and Girlfriend?

I don't go by my director's past films. But yes, I was apprehensive initially and I asked him whether he really has a good subject. I didn't have a clue about his past films, but all I was concerned about was the script. But when Karan gave me the narration, I knew that I have to do this film.

As actors, we should do such films — of course, commercial films will happen but a something like Umar comes once in a while; so we shouldn't lose out on such opportunities.

You had resolved last year that you will actively act in Punjabi movies.

That resolution is still there. I have told myself last year that I will act in Punjabi films more often than I have been doing. I just thought that it is my mother tongue and I should do something from my end to see that the Punjabi culture explodes into the world map.

So, will you be doing that this year as well?

In fact, I have already completed one film called Mannat. That should be out soon. So, I have stayed firm on my promise (laughs).
