Dutt, it seems, is the ideal choice to portray the serial killer.

Here’s a look at how he’s got there.

Khalnayak: One of the biggest hits by director Subhash Ghai, Khalnayak -in which Sanjay Dutt plays a psychotic criminal -instantly catapulted the actor into the big league.

“Dutt has this tough, big guy look, which suits the negative roles he portrays,” says actor Ashwin Mushran.

Vaastav/Hathyar: The role in Vaastav won Sanju baba the Filmfare award for best actor. In the film directed by Mahesh Manjrekar, Sanjay plays an ordinary man who goes astray and ends up becoming a gangster. Everyone remembers Vaastav for Dutt’s honest and powerful performance.

Vaastav was followed by its sequel Hathyar, in which a younger Dutt (the son) plays a goonda ostracised by society because of his family’s underworld connections.

Circumstances compel him to eventually become a gangster, and a ‘good’ one at that.

Kaante: Director Sanjay Gupta roped Dutt in for the role of a rough gangster with flamboyance and style, who went on to win the Bollywood Movie Award - Critics Award (Male) for that film.

In fact, Sanjay Gupta was so taken with Dutt’s Kaante look that he sketched out similar characters for two other films, Plan and Musafir.

Kartoos: Touted as another Khalnayak, this movie saw Sanjay play a dreaded criminal on death row who is sent on a mission to catch and slay a wanted terrorist.

Dutt does a great job of depicting the complexities of the character trying to escape his death sentence by taking up the risky mission.

Daud: In this movie by Ram Gopal Varma, Dutt portrays the role of a small-time thief. He delivers a fine performance in the film to bring the character to life.

Bad boy Sanjay Dutt’s upcoming projects

Aladdin: Producer and director Sujoy Ghosh casts Sanjay as an evil and mighty tyrant possessing a genie. The film will also star Amitabh Bachchan.

Talisman: Dutt will again be seen playing a negative role in this movie by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. The film will also star Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan.

Bihaad: Dutt will star alongside Kumar Gaurav in this action thriller to be directed by Milan Luthria.

The movie will be based on a true story.

Gangs of London: One of the many deals that Dutt has signed with producer Bunty Walia. In the film, Sanjay will play a gang lord.

It is a story about the war between two big gangs.

Who is Sobhraj?

Charles Shobraj, most commonly referred to as the ‘Bikini Killer’ is a French man of Indian and Vietnamese origin.

Born in Saigon in April 1944, he preyed on Western tourists in South East Asia during the 1970s. He allegedly committed at least 12 murders and was jailed in India from 1976 to 1997. He later left for Paris, but on a later trip to Nepal was arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment there.
