said the factories were earlier warned by health section inspectors, who decided to shut them down for not giving heed to the warnings. The factories were shut down during an intensified campaign targeting food outlets and manufacturers to ensure safety for public in the emirate.

The campaign was conducted by six inspectors who visited all factories, stores and outlets which dealt with food products and issued several warnings to those who violated public health regulations and did not follow hygiene procedures.

He said the municipality's inspection campaign was intensified as a follow up to ascertain conditions in food companies and water treatment factories located in the Industrial Area.

Inspectors from the Health Section regularly visit the factories premises, check for compliance with rules and take samples for laboratory testing. They also ensure that the factories abide by the rules regarding labelling, caps and tamper-proof sleeve.

Al Shamsi said the campaign also targets abattoirs and fish market as well as small traditional food shops working without obtaining licences from the municipality.

He pointed out that the Health Section and the Central Laboratory of the municipality were keeping a strict vigil on any malpractice by the outlets by carrying out regular and surprise inspections. "These campaigns are aimed at ensuring a safe food market. The elimination of the sources of unfit, harmful and low quality food is top priority for us," Al Shamsi said.

He said the food inspectors monitor the violations of food production and sale, classify these violations in categories, and set performance standards. "The experienced and qualified inspectors of the municipality are keen on working hard to have control over the market and ensuring the strict implementation of hygiene standards," he added.
