Imagine if The Beach Boys and The Beatles wrote a song together, combining lush surf harmonies with a plinky piano sauntering along. The result? Well, this is the closest you’re even going to my imaginary supergroup The Beachtles. Pretty as a peach.

Popularised as a soft and shimmering acoustic number by Jose Gonzalez, the original by Swedish hipsters The Knife couldn’t be more different. Siblings Karin and Olof create an austere, mechanical atmosphere, complemented by her off-kilter yelped delivery.

Mickey Avalon — Jane Fonda

Jewish rapper Mickey Avalon (real name Yeshe Perl) may not rival the likes of Jay-Z in lyrical dexterity, but his addled slacker routine is amusing in short bursts. Shaking its fists at the charts with a off-kilter country riff, Jane Fonda is a silly ditty about the supposedly numerous ladies in his life.
